Amcrest Review – Amcrest Security Camera (1080p)

Home surveillance cameras are a pretty widespread category. Getting a good security camera system for home security can be tricky. And that applies both to prices, and functionality. There are, however, certain brands that aim to offer plenty, at a low price point. As you will see in this Amcrest review, Amcrest is actually one such brand. It provides a video surveillance system for completely wireless home security, at a budget price.

A CCTV camera that can pan and tilt can be pretty expensive. But, you get the convenience of seeing the activity in the entire room, rather than portions. A wireless camera will only bring prices further up. If you can’t afford an expensive option, such as the Allie Home, or the Compro versions, our Amcrest camera review will give you a budget option, with all the functionality you need.

Wireless cameras and CCTV home security systems are a modern way to keep your home and family safe. Even for business security – digital video monitoring systems are something every business should use to keep an eye on their property.

The Amcrest ProHD is an IP camera that gives you a high-definition image, with sharp night vision, and good color quality. There is also a good, albeit expensive, cloud storage too. Without wasting anymore time, let’s jump into our comprehensive Amcrest security system review.

The Amcrest security camera review: design and features

Almost all of the Amcrest cameras we review come with digital video recorders that allow for 1TB of HDD disk space to keep the HD camera recordings before you erase them or move them to a permanent disk. These state-of-the-art home wireless security surveillance systems will make your life easier and keep you safe, whether you want an outdoor camera or a home one.

The ProHD surveillance camera comes with dimensions of 4.5” x 3.9” x 4.0”. This is actually pretty small, which is great for this kind of appliance. You can get it in black or white. With it, comes a ceiling mount, Ethernet cable, AC adapter and a quick start guide. The camera head is meant to be attached to a motorized cradle, giving you a full 360 degrees of panning, as well as 45 degrees of tilt.

Moving on with the Amcrest 1080p review, you’ll find a 2 megapixel CMOS sensor. There is a 90 degree field of view, as well as a 30 feet night vision range. The video recording maxes out at 30 frames per second. You will also find up to 30 feet of decent quality night vision. A built-in microphone and speaker are also here, for two-way audio. As far as connecting it to your home network, you get 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. On the back, you will find the Ethernet port, an LED indicator, as well as audio in and out ports, external alarm ports, and a card slot. In case you don’t want to pay for Amcrest’s cloud service, just use an SD card.

Both the recorded video, as well as the live one, can be viewed on both mobile devices and PCs. However, managing things such as motion detection, as well as setting detection zones are more complicated. These things require using the Amcrest IP Config utility, and logging into your camera with a browser. And, your choices are limited to Firefox or Internet Explorer. Why? Other browsers aren’t supported yet.

Despite the fact that, as you notice in the Amcrest camera review, it is a pretty difficult DVR to configure, you will find plenty of both camera and network settings. You can adjust gamma, white balance, saturation and exposure, as well as DNS, IP Filter and HTTP port settings. It is also compatible with Amcrest’s NVR line.

Continuing with the Amcrest camera system review: ease of installation and performance

To install the dome camera, you can download the app, and choose Wi-Fi camera from the menu. You can set it up either with an Ethernet cable, or via a Wi-Fi connection. You can create a username and password for easy access, all by scanning the QR code on the base. When you connect the camera to a network, it might take up to 30 seconds to connect. Wireless surveillance is excellent for any home, and a wireless security camera is always better than a wired one.

As far as performance goes, you will notice great video. The quality is 1080p HD. It is sharp, and color quality is great. The night vision black and white video is also great, and contrast is sharp. However, since this is an honest Amcrest 1080p review, you should know that there is an evident pincushion distortion around the edges.

The mechanism for panning and tilting is quiet and smooth. However, when you’re using a mobile app, it is much slower than the Web interface. Detection, both motion and audio, work great, and notifications are instant. The detail is crisp, even if you’re using the digital zoom.

Rounding up the Amcrest review – final verdict

At the end of the day, the results are obvious. The conclusion of our Amcrest security camera review is very positive. You do get a fully motorized, pan and tilt home camera, but you don’t pay a lot for it. The sharp 1080p video is amazing. The panning and tilting functionality is very smooth, although slow if using the mobile app. If you don’t want cloud storage, you’re free to use a microSD card. The settings are more than enough, but you will need the manual. You will also need to download the browser plugins, for complete configuration.

A few more words

The goal of this Amcrest security camera review is to give you an overview of all the features. However, at the end of the day, it is your call. From what I know about the camera, if it was my home, I would buy it. You won’t find the functionality, image quality, and adjustability anywhere else, not at this price point. The optical zoom and superb video quality are just some of the features these CCTV security cams have. The motion detectors offer a certain type of comfort and automation that is guaranteed to make you feel safe.

It is basically a no-brainer – whether you want to spy on your kids (which you probably shouldn’t, this is not a baby monitor), or just want a nice weatherproof home security camera, Amcrest is the right choice.
